Little Miss Independence

'This-n-That'

is a wonderful little shop in
downtown Enumclaw, WA.

Connie is the owner and she and
her staff were great supporters of
'The Witches Night Out in Enumclaw'
as well as my little 'Vintage Garden' while it was open.
Photo: Oh Boy Its that time of year Christmas at This-n-That It is our annual Christmas Open House Stop by on Saturday Nov 16. We will lots of fun things going on this day. Stop in and say hi to Mrs. C she will be here bustling around, hoping that her ELVES worked magic in the store. See you there
Mr. & Mrs. Connie Claus
As soon as she heard the shop was closing,
Connie made a point of coming to me and asking
if I would like to consign a few items in her shop.

Even though it's a store of...hmmm...
this-n-that...
between space and style,
theconsignable pieces are limited.

Connie made a specific request for one of
the flowering chairs I love to plant:
so without further ado, let me present...

'Little Miss Independence'

She's holding little sprouts right now,
but by Memorial Day she'll be in full bloom,
and by the 4th of July she'll be cascading
Red, White & Blue.

The cup and saucer are vintage,
'Independence' ironstone...
such a fitting shelter for a little songbird.

A tribute to the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

Yoo hoo...is anyone still there?

I know it's been a long time since my last post...
but it's been a whirlwind of a year.
  • Porter Antiques closed (home of my 58 Vintage Faire booth)
  • So I opened 'Vintage Garden' in the front of the florist
  • Moved my Home & Work Space
  • Hosted the 2nd Annual 'Witches Night Out in Enumclaw"
  • The florist took a surprisingly sudden retirement...so...
  • I closed the Vintage Garden
  • Moved everything between storage & home
  • Home now equals Warehouse!
  • Kept up my real job and 'gave them a few hours' to get some projects done
  • Hiatus needed and taken
I'm getting 'back in the saddle' again...
and feeling very energized as I consider the right place to share my treasure:
I've submitted applications to local shows and
I've put my name on the waiting list of a new Antique Mall in the area.

When I opened the 'Vintage Garden',
I chose that name to support the association with the Florist,
but now I'm transitioning everything back to '58 Vintage Faire'.
I've contacted FB and should soon see the name change there too,
but for nowyou can still follow me on FB via
Vintage Garden, Enumclaw

I'll let you know when and where it all 'lands'.
In the mean time,
I want to share a few pictures from the
benefit sales that started this whole venture.

Vintage Faire 2010
Denice honored our mother by choosing
'Simply Arlyce'
as the theme for her Breast Cancer 3 Day walk.

The second Vintage Faire
supported my brother Don's Stair Climb with Buckley Fire Dept
to help fight Leukemia
in honor and memory of our cousin Greg.

Don (always Donny to me) brought the Vintage Fire Truck to the Vintage Faire!

Good times...and more to come...keep checking back!

Sale-Day One

It's early and I'm about ready to head to work.
I'm sending good mental vibes to all my fellow vendors
who will be working the first day of our big Downsizing Sale.

Both Porter Antiques and Young's Flowers have a lot of
merchandise to move so we can have room for
The Vintage Garden.

I finished painting the beadboard wall
and the long counter is out of Young's...
meaning the other wall is ready for paint...
See...Behind the Easter Display.
I think it really brightens up the store.

Everything's been pulled from the back and on the sale floor..
something for all seasons, events, holidays.

Everything's for sale...Well, except Mary and the baby!

Little Miss Transition
We're having a big sale at Porter Antiques this weekend
and passing out these little notices to everyone.
Isn't she adorable!?!

Shut the Door
Have you heard the news?
Porter Antiques is moving to   The Vintage Garden
Opening in May 2013

Early Changes

I first ran across Young's Flowers
during a visit to The Victorian Country Christmas...
gosh, I think that was about 20 years ago!

I remember coming out to see the shop because of all the wonderful
vintage style gift and home decor items they had in their booth.

At the time, I remember thinking that Enumclaw
would be a great little place to live....

There was a drug store on the corner with a Hallmark section,
which is now split into separate operations.
One half will soon open as Jackson's, an Italian pizza place and the other side
is a busy Gaming Zone for teens, lots of big screens and Rock Band, etc.
When I came out here years ago, there was a quilt shop
which it's now a Thai restaurant and it still has a wonderful mural
of a an old fashioned haberdasher outside.
In my rafting days, I drove through this little town many a time
and continued to think that it would be a great place to live....
but it was my brother Don and his wife Denice who made the first move.

It wasn't until about 8 years ago that I finally moved to Enumclaw
and although the commute is llonnnggg...
I love being in this small community.
I love driving by the cows and fields,
I love seeing the mountain bold & beautiful whenever the sky is clear,
I love the seasonal parades that have as many people
going down the street as sitting on the side lines...
and I love that people are so interested in our move across the street...

I think it's amazing that Young's Flowers was one of the first things
that lured me to Enumclaw and now we will be sharing a store space.

The Youngs no longer own the business.
For several years it's been in the hands of 3 very nice people
Helen & Mary (Mom & Daughter) and John (Mr.Helen) is their go-to-guy
for building, moving, etc...as well as the ever important flower delivery.

John's been very busy moving, remodeling, & rewiring their counter.
I've been painting the lower walls to a lighter color...and Sharon (from Porter's)
has been clearing the upstairs, getting ready for our big sale this weekend...

I'm only painting below the display loft.
The area above is a light moss green which we'll keep for awhile.
This picture shows the beadboard in black and
there were a couple of red sections too.

...here's the primer mid-application.  I had it tinted the same color as the paint,
which is Swiss Cream.  It's still wet here, but the finish is actually flat.

...and here's the next wall to get paint...

...and then there's the purple carpet
and this little 'loft' that we need to clear out...

...more pix to come as I get things done...so I better sign off and get busy!
....hope you'll check in again soon!

The End and the Beginning

Almost everyone knows that I have a space
in an Antique Store here in Enumclaw;  Porter Antiques.
Sharon Porter is the proprietor and has been in this 'business' for several years.
She has recently decided to 'opt out' of being the shop proprietor,
preferring to focus on being a vendor instead.
 After some thought, the opportunity
to rent a smaller space has led me to the decision
 to become the proprietor and
Sharon (aka Porter Antiques) will be a vendor in

The Vintage Garden.

I will continue to be '58 Vintage Faire' but since the space we will share
is the front of Young's Flowers, the local Florist...
I opted for a store name that will represent both aspects of our joint venture.

We are only moving across the street!

...and we've got matching notices up in our windows...
We have a Facebook page...
We have a phone (smart phone, actually)...
I'll post the number when I get it all 'set up'.

Porter Antiques is hosting a joint sale with Young's Flowers
this weekend (March 15,16,17) to clear out some old stuff
(hahaha, no pun intended!)...
and make way for some 'new' stuff for the 'new' store.

Hope you'll all drop back by to find out more of the details as they develop...

Thank Heaven for Little Boys

Do you remember Maurice Chevalier?
If you are so fortunate,
then you are likely to remember a similar song title sung by
Mr. Chevalier;
Thank Heaven for Little Girls
The lyrics go on to share that he is always thankful when he sees little girls,
he is thankful for them because...
"they grow up in such delightful ways!"
What may at first have sounded a little Ouooo (nose crinkling)
is really more OoLaLa (eyes winking.)

My personal reference is for my 3 brothers Brian, Eric & Don
(who will forever wear his boyhood moniker 'Donny' in my mind).
Although I couldn't foresee the blessing when I was young and longing for a baby sister;
I thank heaven for these little boys...
because they've grown up in such delightful and helpful ways!

Although they've all helped at different time,
I want to take this minute to express my Thankfulness
that Brian has a weekly 'lay over' in Seattle.
This allows me to spend time with him regularly.
It's not every week, and it's rarely more than a few hours,
but the opportunity is there and I'm very grateful.
Lately, I've taken full advantage of his helpful nature...
he's arrived to a list of 'can you help'
to which he is always willing to lend a hand.

So for those of you who know the tune,
you can imagine the following to music.

Thank heaven for little boys,
they grow up in such delightful & helpful ways!

PS...If you don't remember Maurice Chevalier,
then you really should 'google' and
see if you can't find a site to listen as he croons in his
 deliciously charming french accent.

Baby's Got a New Dress

Surprise!
Here's my new blog design.
Karen did an amazing job, especially considering it was all just with a phone consult.
I told her the 'things' I like about other blogs, both those she's done and others I've seen.
She brought several bits together to this lovely presentation.

Karen's button to "My Desert Cottage" is with my favorites.
There you will find many 'lovelies', along with a link to 'Valentine Designs' her blog design site.
I encourage you to check it out.
Even if you don't have a need for a blog design (at present),
she shows many of her previous designs and they actually link to those sites...
many lovely blogs to visit!
It's an avenue for getting 'lost' in blogland.

Enjoy...and...

Keeping it Real...or would Reel be more appropriate?

I've just been to Miss Mustard Seed's blog, you should go there too!  If I ever figure out how to do some of the great linky-thingies, I'll list/link some of my favorite places to e-visit.  Anyway, she links you to a series on 'grow your blog'.  The first entry is today and it's about Authenticity.   So, although I'm not someone who makes resolutions for the New Year (because I never keep them!), I did 'resolve' to continue with my blog as daily as possible...so maybe this year, I do have a 'resolution'?!  (How about that?)...and I will work on being Authentic.

The other advice was to 'write like you talk or think'...Oh my, that would be a mistake for me...I tend to ramble, interrupt (others and myself), repeat, get circular in thought, forget nouns, forget where I was in a story, forget punch lines, mix metaphors...need I go on?  What I will do is write like I always write (for those who receive my rare letters)...Today's post is a little more like I talk or think (hmm?)...good evidence of why I shouldn't write this way...Too much of my 'flight of ideas' shows through.  It's an example of how I talk/think...lot's of parenthetical phrases or slightly sarcastic or smart-mouth comments (That's why I've always found it more fun to sit at the back of the class and why when I need to behave, I send myself to the front right away.) I also have to put myself on restriction from certain 'friends', because they are the bad influence (not the other way around, I'm sure.)...see what I mean, ramble!

Anyway...I will try to keep it Real...Oh and as my header said "Reel would be more appropriate".  I have many, many family members who live to fish and are descended from like stock...Myself included (the descended part, not the live to fish part).

So, if you (in your opinion) believe I'm not being reel (aka real), let me know, send me a comment....I will try to real-it-up (no pun intended) (hahaha)...Ok, another interruption...some of you may know that my knick name is Corey and my middle name is Dee** (I'll tell you about my **namesake another day) (see what I mean about interrupting myself)...Well, several (or by now you could say many) years ago, several of my co-workers recognized my sense of humor for what it is and corrected my name to Corney Dee...so you see, I really meant that 'hahaha' at the start of this paragraph...and now I got another chuckle when I typed really!

Maybe I've just been up for too many hours...better close and again say, Thank you for visiting...and I meant it when I said to let me know if you don't think I'm being Real or Reel, whichever you prefer....Coreen

Weighing the important things in life on this first day of 2012.....Faith, Family, & Friends

I am so fortunate to have family and friends who have been more faithful to checking my blog than I have been about making entries.   If you've read my first words, you know I had very strong feelings about starting on October 1st, and I'm still very happy that I was able to accomplish this goal.  However, I was remiss about having a plan to keep it going.   As the holidays 'ticked' by, I tackled this plan and it then became apparent that I needed to have a 'renewal' date....What could be better than New Year's Day?

So here I am today, ready to renew this journey and hoping you will rejoin me on this venture.  I can't promise I'll post everyday, but my goal is to never leave you hanging again.

So where have I been and what have I been doing?  Some of you know, I have been able to open a vintage booth.   As I mentioned in my profile, it's actually for old stuff and new, fabric and furniture, sad antiques made happy or new items given a sense of age.

I now actually have 2 booths and even though it's been a lot of work, it's a great experience.  I'm currently at The Queen's Ransom in Buckley and Porter's Antiques & Trading Co in Enumclaw...Both are way up here in the Great Pacific NW of Washington State.

If you're in the area, I hope you stop in and have a look around.  Even if you don't find something in my little corner, there are many vendors with many delightful items.  It's a chance to stroll through history and take a little walk down memory lane.

The picture above is a lovely old scale I have in Buckley.  It seemed the perfect 'starting point' for this re-beginning, capturing the most important aspects of my life...Faith, Family and Friends.

Thanks for visiting, hope you stop by again soon...Coreen

What's it all about?

58 Vintage Faire

That's 'what it's all about'!
You put your antique in, You put your antique out
You put your antique in, now sand and paint it all about!

Go on a Treasure Hunt
Scour Craigslist, Estate Sales or the Garage Sale Market
You know what I mean..."Junk to one, Treasure to another"
Sew, paint, craft, post on CL (& now blog!) for everyday & holidays
Make Sad Antiques Happy
Give New Items that Sense of Age
Find Treasure to Share Their Space

Then what to do with it all?
Find a little shop and rent some space.
Make some walls out of old doors
(The cool kind of 1923 french doors with 12 window panes each)
Move in tables-n-chairs and cover with collected 'treasure'

Now, wait (and hope)...Did I find 'Treasure'?

Oh, excitement and affirmation, 'Treasure' is selling!
Which means...Gotta Go Getta Go Treasure Hunting again

So here's the chorus for my new venture!
Go on a Treasure Hunt
Scour Craigslist, Estate Sales or the Garage Sale Market
You know what I mean..."Junk to one, Treasure to another"
Sew, paint, craft, post on CL (& now blog!) for everyday & holidays
Make Sad Antiques Happy
Give New Items that Sense of Age
Find Treasure to Share Their Space

If you are in the area (Buckley, Washington)
Stop in at "The Queen's Ransom" on Main Street
It's open 10am-5pm Mon-Sat
Look for my 'Window'd Walls' and take a peek!

Apologies to those who are too far away
But don't feel left out.
Remember, Camera & Pix 'Coming Soon'

How I decided on
58 Vintage Faire
Several names tumbled through my mind
(remember, my notes on flight of ideas a lot in mind)

I wanted a number that was my own
58...(Born in 1958)

It had to be to the point
Sad Antiques Made Happy
New Items Given a Sense of Age
 Treasure to Share Their Space
Vintage...(The Treasure, not just me!)

It had to say excitement and fun, like I find at a fair
but I thought the 'Old English' spelling more fitting
Faire
 ------------------------------------------------------
58 Vintage Faire

That's 'what it's all about'!
You put your antique in, You put your antique out
You put your antique in, now sand and paint it all about!
I guess you could say I'm having a perpetual 'Hokey Pokey' Party

Thanks for visiting and hope you drop in again...Coreen
